Friendly Pickings

Posted in General Blog Post at 5:55 pm by Pastor Don

Dear Friends:

Have you ever noticed that we tend to become like those with whom we associate? Not that I’m wanting to be like my pumpkin friends here.

I have noticed though that people do tend to be like those with whom they run.

With whom do you run? Years ago, there was a book entitled, “Are You Running With Me, Jesus?” It’s a good thought. The best thing that I could ever counsel someone to do is to “Fix their eyes on Jesus, that one who is a friend to all, and an example to all.”

My goal is always to become more like Jesus. However, it only happens when I treat him like a friend. Then only do people see the “Christ” in me. How about you? Who are you becoming like?

A Light Left On

Posted in General Blog Post at 2:09 pm by Pastor Don

Dear Friends:

If you look at the cup of coffee and lit candle, it has a hospitable look to it. It looks inviting, something you’d like to be around, especially if you’re feeling in the dark and cold.

How about you? Is your life one that is warm and inviting? Do you make people feel glad that they happened to be with you, or do they walk away from you with a porcupine-encountered feeling?

As Christians, we’re called to be inviting, and to express a warmth of love that would point toward Christ, and give honor and glory to God. How are you doing? By the way, the coffee’s on, and the candle’s burning. In addition, we’ve left a light on for you. Come on by.

Seeking Light

Posted in General Blog Post at 1:47 pm by Pastor Don

Dear Friends:

We’re fast approaching my least favorite month of the year, November. Why November? After all, my birthday is in November, there’s the wonderful Thanksgiving holiday (by the way, we are planning to host a Thanksgiving dinner somehow at the Church; you are invited). However, with turning of the current season, the days are growing shorter, and the dark is growing longer.

This current state of affairs reminds me of John 8:12. Jesus said to them, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” Ultimately what does give you light? What illuminates your life? For me, it is Christ, whether the days are long or short. As the days get shorter, feel free to stop by and have a cup of coffee with me. I’ll keep the candle burning.

Planting in October

Planting in OctoberDear Friends:

Here in Minnesota, we’re continuing to enjoy summer in October. Flowers are still budding and blooming; the grass is emerald green; and my pumpkin is still growing. It’s a little over a hundred pounds, I’m thinking. One little pumpkin seed produced this huge growth.

Seeds…there’s all kinds! There are the seeds of encouragement or discouragement. There are the seeds of being positive or being negative. There are the seeds of kindness as well as the seeds of bitterness. I myself am a pastor today because many years ago, someone from my home church encouraged me as a youth to consider the ministry. The old gentleman stated to me, “You would do well. God can use you.” That has stayed with me over the 31 years that I have pastored, working with and touching 1000s of people’s lives.

Whom today will you plant within their being a seed of encouragement, a seed of kindness, a seed of love? The opportunities are endless. God bless you in your planting.

Your friend,

Pastor Don
